St. Elizabeth boys set to face Thomas Jefferson in Class 1 quarterfinals

The St. Elizabeth Hornets will look to make their third straight appearance in the Class 1 Final Four when they take on the Thomas Jefferson Independent Cavaliers tonight in the quarterfinals.

Game time is 6 p.m. at Eugene High School.

St. Elizabeth (17-6) advanced with a 55-50 win in Tuesday night's sectional against Golden City.

Brock Lucas, a junior who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career Tuesday night, leads the Hornets at 21.5 points per game. Carson Kesel is next at 13.0, while Clayton Holtmeyer is totaling 10.3 points per game.

The Hornets, who were second in the state in 2020 and third in 2019, are totaling 69 points per game and allow an average of 58.

Thomas Jefferson Independent (20-5) moved to the quarterfinal by defeating Miami 66-39 in the sectional round. Drew Goodhope led four Cavaliers in double figures with 17 points. Jay Ball added 15, while Dhruv Gheewala had 12 and Caden Myers chipped in with 11.

The Cavaliers average 62 points per game and allow 45.5.

Golden City is the lone common opponent for the two teams. Thomas Jefferson Independent lost 69-55 to Golden City on Jan. 28.

It is the second quarterfinal appearance in program history for Thomas Jefferson Independent, located in Joplin. The Cavaliers also advanced this far in the state playoffs in 2009.

The St. Elizabeth-Thomas Jefferson Independent winner will face the winner of tonight's quarterfinal between Orrick (16-6) and Mound City (27-1) in the semifinals at noon Friday at JQH Arena in Springfield.
