Post 5 Juniors finish 3-1 in Sedalia Wood Bat Tournament

SEDALIA - The Jefferson City Post 5 Juniors finished with a 3-1 record during the weekend, taking third place in the Sedalia Wood Bat Tournament at Liberty Park.

Post 5 had a 2-1 record in pool play Friday and Saturday, then defeated Omaha (Neb.) KB Juniors 8-0 in six innings Sunday in the third-place game.

Chase Schnieders was the winning pitcher for Jefferson City against Omaha. In 41/3 innings, he allowed one hit and four walks while striking out nine. Nate Roark pitched the last 12/3 innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

At the plate, Hunter Berendzen went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles for Post 5, while Dalton Scheulen and Roark each had one triple and one RBI.

Jefferson City began the tournament with a pair of wins Friday, both by run-rule. Post 5 won 12-0 in five innings against KC Blue and 15-3 in five innings against Lee's Summit.

Aiden Boeckmann went 3-for-4 with three RBI singles in the opener against KC Blue. Roark also finished with a pair of doubles and three RBI, and Luke Cavender was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

Roark pitched the first two innings, striking out one, while Berendzen threw the final three innings for the win, striking out four and walking two while giving up two hits.

Post 5 had a pair of big innings against Lee's Summit, scoring seven runs in the second inning and five more in the third.

Eight players had at least one hit in the win. Holden Brand had two singles and three RBI, Max Buscher had two singles and two RBI and Jack Robertson added two singles and one RBI.

Roark and Patrick Baker each had two RBI in the win for Jefferson City.

Scheulen was the winning pitcher, giving up two runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 32/3 innings of relief. Lane Wilson tossed the first 11/3 innings, striking out two while allowing one run and one walk.

On Saturday, Post 5 dropped a 3-2 decision to the North Little Rock (Ark.) Optimist Colts to conclude pool play.

Berendzen's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth scored Brand to give Jefferson City a 1-0 lead. North Little Rock answered with two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to go ahead 3-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Cavender reached on a fielder's choice to score Jace Kesel and cut the deficit to one run. Cavender, representing the winning run, stole second base with one out, but the Colts got a flyout and a strikeout to end the game, keeping the tying run at third base.

Buscher pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. Brand had a single and a double to lead Jefferson City's offense.

The Post 5 Juniors (9-4), who won the MidAmerica Baseball Atkins Elite Tournament from June 10-13 in Columbia, will return to action Saturday and Sunday in the Blue Springs Wood Bat Tournament.
