Post 5 Juniors finish 2-0 at GMB Nationals

ELLISVILLE - The Jefferson City Post 5 Juniors were 2-0 in the GMB Nationals 16U Tournament before rain canceled the remainder of the games Sunday.

Post 5 opened pool play with a 10-1 win in six innings Thursday night against JC Independent.

Jefferson City scored at least one run in every inning, while JC Independent scored its one run in the top of the third.

Holden Brand led Post 5, going 3-for-4 with one single, two doubles and two RBI. Luke Cavender and Max Buscher each had two singles and one RBI, while Jace Kesel added two singles. Hunter Berendezen also finished with an RBI groundout.

Jack Robertson was the winning pitcher. In three-plus innings, he allowed one run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Buscher followed with two innings of relief, striking out four. Berendzen then pitched the sixth inning, walking one and striking out one.

Rain canceled all games Saturday, leaving Post 5 one more pool-play game Sunday. Jefferson City defeated the Jefferson County Blazers 8-1 to finish pool play 2-0.

Post 5 used a five-run fifth inning to pull away to victory. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run by Brand.

Cavender led the hitting attack, going 3-for-4 with one single, two doubles and an RBI. Berendzen had two doubles and one RBI, Nate Roark had two singles and one RBI and Aiden Boeckmann added two singles.

Buscher picked up the win on the mound. In four innings, he gave up three hits, including a solo home run, while walking two and striking out nine.

Schnieders pitched the next two innings, striking out three, while Berendzen went 1-2-3 in the seventh with a strikeout.

Post 5 earned the No. 1 seed in bracket play and was scheduled to play a rematch against the Blazers in the semifinals, but rain arrived during the first inning, stopping the game and canceling the rest of the tournament.

The Missouri Gators had defeated Hounds Baseball 4-3 in the first semifinal game.

The Post 5 Juniors (11-4-1) will host the Missouri AA Zone I Tournament this week at the American Legion Post 5 Sports Complex. Jefferson City will face Chillicothe Post 25 in the first round at 4 p.m. Thursday, with the winner advancing to face Washington Post 218 in the next round of the three-team tournament at 7 p.m.
