Boys Tennis: Helias wins Marshall Tournament

MARSHALL - The Helias Crusaders went 3-0 in dual competition Friday to win the Marshall Tournament.

In their first dual, Helias defeated Marshall 5-4.

Winning in singles for the Crusaders were Justin Francka (8-4), Andrew Dowden (8-6) and Caleb Mueller (8-5). Falling in singles were Ethan Foucheaux (2-8), Matthew Schepers (6-8) and Jacob Zerr (5-8).

In doubles, Caleb Porting and Jonah Lanigan won 8-5, while Lucas Woods and Isaac Rackers also won 9-7. Adam Winkelman and John Paul McGuire lost in doubles 0-8.

The Crusaders followed that with a 7-2 win against School of the Osage.

Helias swept all three doubles matches, getting wins from Porting and Lanigan (8-2), Woods and Rackers (8-4) and Winkelman and McGuire (8-4).

In singles, picking up wins for the Crusaders were Francka (8-6), Foucheaux (9-7), Schepers (9-8, 7-1 tiebreaker) and Zerr 8-1.

In their final match, the Crusaders needed all three doubles wins from their JV players to edge Sedalia Smith-Cotton 5-4.

Helias, which went 8-1 in doubles play in the tournament, got wins from Porting and Lanigan (6-1), Woods and Rackers (6-2) and Winkelman and McGuire (6-0).

Dowden won 8-4 in singles, while Zerr won 8-2. Falling for the Crusaders were Francka (4-8), Mueller (1-8), Foucheaux (6-8) and Schepers (5-8).

Helias (7-3), which has won seven straight duals, will host the Helias Invitational on Tuesday at the Crusader Athletic Complex.

First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
