Early surge leads Fatima baseball past Russellville for 8-2 win

RUSSELLVILLE - The Fatima Comets scored two runs in the top of the first inning and five more in the fourth on the way to an 8-2 win Friday against the Russellville Indians.

Fatima recorded 13 hits, with Blake Gentges and Shane Verslues having three hits each and Dawson Woehr and Chase Plassmeyer both adding two hits.

Woehr and Jake Boyce homered for the Comets (7-1), and Evan Kliethermes threw six innings of four-hit ball, allowing two earned runs and a walk while striking out three.

The earned runs came on a 2-run homer by Landon Plochberger in the third inning. Isaiah Kauffman had two of the Indians' four hits.

Plochberger threw one inning as the starter for Russellville (6-2), Jesse Daniel gave up six hits and four runs in 2 innings of relief and Charlie Miller struck out two, walked one, and allowed two earned runs on three hits. Nolan Schroer threw two perfect innings to close out the game with a strikeout.

Russellville's game today at the Cairo Tournament were canceled due to rain, so the Indians resume play Monday at Eugene.

Fatima plays at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Hickman.
