California loses to Southern Boone in defensive battle

ASHLAND - The California Pintos ended the regular season Friday night with a 21-0 loss to the Southern Boone Eagles.

The game was scoreless after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Pintos had a chance to take the lead, but an interception on the Eagles' 15-yard line ended the drive. The Eagles drove down the field and scored the first touchdown on fourth-and-20 at the California 35-yard line on a desperate heave to the right side line was caught in the end zone to make it 7-0 with 3:22 left in the first half.

The Pintos had a chance to tie the game near the end of the first half, but a pass to the end zone on fourth-and-14 with 5 seconds left fell incomplete.

Southern Boone (5-3) made it a 14-0 game with 1:54 left in the third quarter on a short touchdown run. The Eagles then scored the final touchdown on another short run with 4:16 left in the fourth quarter.

California ends the regular season with a 6-3 record overall and 4-3 in the Tri-County Conference.

The Pintos, who finish as the No. 4 seed in Class 3 District 4, will host the Boonville Pirates next Friday in the first round of districts.
