MOKANE — The Russellville Lady Indians gave everything they had against the No. 1 team in Class 2 during Saturday afternoon's District 3 Tournament championship game.
Russellville scored two runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings, and the Lady Indians had multiple scoring opportunities after that. But Tolton escaped jam after jam, and in the bottom of the 11th, Emilee Farnan hit a three-run home run to give the Lady Trailblazers a 6-3 walk-off win.
Russellville finished with a 23-4 record in a season that included a 12-game winning streak and two tournament championships.
The Lady Indians took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Cali Coombs singled, stole second base and came all the way around to score on an error.
Tolton tied the game in the second, scoring a run on a passed ball. The Lady Trailblazers took a 3-1 lead with a pair of RBI singles in the fourth.
Tolton pitcher Paige Bedsworth, who has committed to play next season at Drake, had 12 strikeouts through six innings. But in the seventh, Russellville's Claire Duenckel drew a leadoff walk and Cambell Backues was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch then moved both runners into scoring position.
A walk to Anna Zimmerman loaded the bases, then Coombs hit a one-out single into left field, scoring Duenckel and Backues to tie the game at 3.
Russellville left one runner on base in the eighth and left the bases loaded in the 10th, following a leadoff double by Reagan Jenkins, a single by Josie Stewart and a two-out walk to Duenckel.
Meanwhile, Lady Indians pitcher Kalyn Smith worked around jams as well. In the eighth, Tolton tried to bunt home the winning run, but Smith caught the runner on third attempting to score to keep the game tied.
Both teams went 1-2-3 in the ninth, and Smith retired the side again in the 10th.
Zimmerman singled in the 11th and stole second and third base, but Bedsworth left her stranded there. The Lady Indians left 12 runners on base in the loss.
Tolton began the bottom of the 11th with a double and a bunt single before Farnan hit her walk-off homer.
Smith pitched 10-plus innings for Russellville, throwing a total of 150 pitches. She allowed six runs on 10 hits to go with four walks and three strikeouts.
In 11 innings, Bedsworth struck out 21 Lady Indians. She gave up three runs on seven hits with five walks. She also went 3-for-5 at the plate for the Lady Trailblazers.
Coombs went 2-for-6 with two RBI for Russellville, finishing the season with a .500 batting average (51-for-102). Stewart also finished with two singles.
Tolton (21-3) advances to the Class 2 quarterfinals and will play Wednesday at Elsberry (14-10), which won the District 4 championship 12-8 against Jefferson: Festus on Friday.
