When Terry Walker became the head football coach at his alma mater Jefferson City in 2018, he said, "If I didn't think we could win soon, I wouldn't be here."

After six victories in two seasons, Walker has turned in a letter of resignation.

The letter was submitted Tuesday, but the Jefferson City School District Board of Education has yet to approve it.

Walker could not be reached for comment.

"We're starting our search immediately and we're trying to find the best person for the position," Jefferson City activities director Chad Rizner said.

The Jays concluded the 2019 season with seven consecutive losses by an average of nearly 31 points per game, including a 68-16 defeat in district play against eventual Class 6 state runner-up Joplin.

Jefferson City went 2-1 in the first three games of the season, with back-to-back road wins against Hannibal and Hickman.

It's the program's lowest win total since going 2-8 in 2002, the first year under head coach Tony Grosso.

Jefferson City won three straight games during its first season under Walker, but the Jays dropped five of their final six games of the season to finish 4-6.

Walker replaced Ted LePage after compiling a record of 37-3 in three seasons at Blair Oaks.

The Falcons have gone 27-1 in the past two seasons under LePage, including going 15-0 on their way to a Class 2 state championship in 2018.

The remaining Jays staff will oversee the offseason workouts.

"The timing of it is obviously not good," Rizner said. "Being this late and the summer stuff already getting going. The schedule that the football program already had set up was much heavier in July, so that's better for the situation."

The position of head football coach at Jefferson City High School was posted Wednesday night on the Jefferson City School District website.
