Wrestling: Jays in second place at Hickman Tournament

COLUMBIA - The Jefferson City Jays are second out of 18 teams Friday after the first day of the Hickman Tournament.

Jefferson City posted 85 points on the first day, trailing only Edwardsville, Ill., with 95.5 points. Northwest: Cedar Hill is third with 75 points.

Seven wrestlers won their respective pools on Day 1.

Will Berendzen went 3-0 at 160 pounds, winning each of his matches by fall.

Finishing 2-0 to win their pools were Sam Rackers at 145, Will Kuster at 152, Michael Friederich at 170 and Brandon Backues at 285. Friederich and Backues won both of their matches by fall, while Rackers and Kuster each recorded a win by fall and by major decision.

JoeJoe Kuster won an 8-5 decision to win his pool at 132, while Jakeil Hayes won by fall at 182 to win his pool.

Clayton Hurley won his first two matches by fall at 138 but still has one more match to go before finishing up pool play.

Posting 1-1 records in pool play for the Jays were Dajuan Wallace at 113, Hunter Walling at 126, Dawson Prenger at 195 and Brant Aulbur at 220. Wallace, Prenger and Aulbur won their matches by fall, while Walling won by major decision.

Wrestling concludes today with bracket play.
