Lady Jays roll past Smith-Cotton in basketball

SEDALIA - The Jefferson City Lady Jays led by 20 points after the first quarter Tuesday night on their way to a 59-23 victory against the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Lady Tigers.

Jefferson City led 21-1 after the first eight minutes, with Smith-Cotton's only point coming on a free throw with :11 remaining in the quarter. The Lady Jays extended their lead to 35-7 at the half as the Lady Tigers didn't score a basket in the opening two quarters. It was 54-16 going to the fourth quarter, which was played with a running clock.

Hannah Nilges scored 18 points to pace the Lady Jays. She also had five assists. Sarah Linthacum totaled 14 points and five rebounds, while Kara Daly chipped in with 10 points and three steals. Hannah Linthacum also had five rebounds and three steals.

Smith-Cotton is now 6-5.

Jefferson City (11-0), ranked No. 1 in Class 5 by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association and No. 25 in the country by MaxPreps, will host Waynesville on Friday night at Fleming Fieldhouse.

In Tuesday's JV game, Jefferson City defeated Smith-Cotton 48-19. Addison Morgan led the Lady Jays with 18 points, while Emmarie Graham chipped in with 12.
