The Chaminade Red Devils burst up the middle, sprinted to the outside and connected on deep throws downfield Friday night at Adkins Stadium.

The Jefferson City Jays had no answer.

"They've got some incredibly talented and skilled players and they made made our players look not real good in a lot of situations," Jays coach Terry Walker said following a 50-21 loss on Homecoming. "They executed, we didn't."

It just wasn't the Jays' night from the first play.

Jefferson City fumbled and lost six yards to begin the game and went three-and-out.

Then Chaminade receiver Elijah Griffin was left open downfield to catch a 69-yard touchdown pass from Missouri commit Brady Cook on the Red Devils' first play.

That was the first of four touchdown plays of more than 40 yards for Chaminade.

Loren Fortune got around the outside for a 53-yard score for a 12-0 lead at the 4:33 mark of the first quarter.

Amar Johnson went 42 yards to the end zone for a 20-0 lead with less than a minute left in the first quarter.

And to answer a 10-play, 62-yard touchdown drive for the Jays, Cook dropped in a 56-yard touchdown pass down the sideline to Fortune for a 28-7 lead at the 4:53 mark of the second quarter.

Fortune lined up in various spots for the Red Devils, running nine times for 146 yards and two scores and catching a pair of passes for a team-high 78 yards.

"We knew they ran a bunch of formations," Walker said. "And our Achilles heel, really for the last year and five games, has been our weakness with regards to recognizing sets, recognizing two-receiver sets, three-receiver sets, recognizing tight ends.

"And we work on it and work on and work on it, and we'll make an improvement there. But they're running plays at such a pace that we've got to do better."

Fortune's final carry of the first half was from 19 yards out with 1:27 left in the second quarter.

Chaminade (4-1), the No. 5 ranked team in Class 5, led 34-7 at halftime.

Jefferson City (2-3) couldn't get much to work against Chaminade's defense, which limited David Bethune to 65 yards on 14 rushes.

Five of those carries resulted in 40 yards on the Jays' first-half scoring drive.

Cole Gresham completed 7-of-14 passes for 94 yards with his two touchdowns accounting for 60 of those yards.

"They were changing their front, anywhere from a three-man front, five-man, even a six-man front at times," Walker said. "We've got to figure out how we can handle that, because right now we have a real weakness with consistently protecting the quarterback or consistently preventing penetration.

"Penetration destroys the run play, and missed run throughs destroys pass protection."

Darrell Jones got the Jays within two scores with a 13-yard, toe-tapping touchdown grab with 6:09 left in the second quarter.

Ben Folz made the extra points to make it 20-7.

"That was a great individual effort on a play," Walker said. "And DJ is a playmaker. The kid plays hard. He plays hard on offense and defense."

Gresham's other score was a 47-yard strike between a pair of defenders to Bethune for a 47-yard score to make it 50-21 with 1:59 remaining.

Special teams also came into play for the Jays.

Devin White ran back a kickoff 97 yards for a score with 8:24 left in the third quarter.

Gresham's completion to Bethune on the 2-point conversion made the score 42-15.

Cook completed 6-of-15 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns, including an 8-yard throw to Maurice Anthony prior to White's return.

Cook connected to Anthony on the 2-point conversion to make it 42-7.

Chaminade's last touchdown came with 1:11 left in the third quarter when Johnson capped a two-play, 10-yard drive with a 7-yard run.

Fortune ran it in for two points for a 50-15 lead.

That short field was set up by a Jabin Johnson punt return, which didn't result in a score because Folz ran to the sideline and halted Johnson in his tracks for a tackle.

"Ben's got a nasty streak in him," Walker said. "You don't like to see your kicker have the hardest hit of the game, but Ben had the hardest hit of the game."

Jefferson City will head to Columbia next Friday to play Rock Bridge (1-4), which defeated Hickman 39-8 on Friday.
