Jefferson City's Baskar qualifies for the Class 2 girls tennis tournament

Jefferson City sophomore Sandhiya Baskar secured a spot in the Class 2 state tournament Tuesday with a win in single plays in the sectional round, hosted at the Crusader Athletic Complex.

Baskar picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win against Mackenzie Jones of Francis Howell Central to become one of 16 state qualifiers for the Class 2 state tournament, which takes place next Friday and Saturday at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.

Baskar won the Class 2 District 8 singles title Saturday, becoming the Lady Jays' first district singles champion since 2014.

In sectional doubles play, Akhi Donthireddy and Madelyn Becker lost 2-6, 6-7 (5-7) to Parkway Central's Chava Hahn and Maggie Huff. Also for the Lady Jays, Sudhi Kumar and Bailey Higgins lost 1-6, 0-6 to Michelle Korenfeld and Akansha Negi of Parkway Central.

Jefferson City (14-8) will compete as a team in the Class 2 sectional round against Parkway Central (9-7) on Saturday at Parkway Central. The winner will face either Hazelwood West (8-6) or Timberland (16-0) later that day in the quarterfinals.
