ST. LOUIS - De Smet's first play of the game went for a 37-yard touchdown.

De Smet's first play of the second half was a 65-yard scoring run.

It wasn't much different in between as the top-ranked Spartans defeated the Jefferson City Jays 63-0 on Friday night.

De Smet's three-man wrecking crew of Darez Snider, Taj Butts and Rico Barfield ran around and through the Jays' defense for a combined 361 yards on just 22 carries.

"They had two or three running backs that were probably better than any running back we might have seen so far this year," Jefferson City coach Terry Walker said.

Snider scored the first of the Spartans' seven rushing touchdowns on the team's first offensive play, bolting to the left side, breaking tackles along the sideline and cutting back to the right before eventually crossing the goal line for a 6-0 lead 1:52 into the game.

Snider needed fewer moves to score his second touchdown, finding space to the right before running across the field to the left to outrun the secondary for a 78-yard play and a 27-0 advantage after a Luke Bauer extra point midway through the first quarter.

Snider amounted for 161 yards on seven rushing attempts.

Butts averaged 27.5 yards per carry, gaining 110 yards with touchdown runs of 3 and 65 yards.

He went untouched up the middle on the first play of the second half to make the score 53-0.

"A guy left his gap," Walker said. "Again, an incident or situation where you get a guy trying to do more than what he's supposed to do."

Barfield ended up with the most carries (11) and touchdowns (three) for De Smet (7-0).

Barfield's first score followed a Kaleb Purdy interception, capping a four-play, 32-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown to lead 13-0 about three minutes into the game.

On Jefferson City's second play of the next drive, Jakailin Johnson intercepted a tipped pass intended for Darrell Jones and returned it a short distance for a touchdown.

A 36-yard punt return by Ra'Shod Smith-Harvey and a 19-yard completion from Michael Wheeler to Snider led to a 1-yard score for Barfield, making it 40-0 with 1:52 left in the first quarter.

"We just looked tentative," Walker said. "We looked really tentative, looked intimidated. Those are two things that don't go well on the football field."

The final score of the first half came with 5:34 left when Barfield took a toss on an option play and went 40 yards to the end zone to lead 47-0.

De Smet added a 7-yard touchdown pass from Wheeler to Smith-Harvey and a 34-yard field goal by Bauer after Butts' 65-yard scoring run.

Jefferson City had opportunities to punch it in the end zone, but turned it over on downs at the De Smet 22 and at the 14 in the first half.

Lavon Jones ended the Jays' final first-half drive with an interception on a fourth-and-15 from the De Smet 27.

Christian Gray also picked off Jays quarterback Cole Gresham on Jefferson City's third play of the second half.

Jefferson City (2-5) will host the Battle Spartans, who fell 29-0 to Rockhurst (4-3), next Friday in Columbia.

Battle enters the 7 p.m. game with a 4-3 record.
