Jefferson City tops Hannibal in district girls tennis

The top-seeded Jefferson City Lady Jays began their postseason Tuesday with a 5-0 win against the Hannibal Lady Pirates in the semifinals of the Class 2 District 8 Tournament at Washington Park.

Winning in doubles for the Lady Jays were Sandhiya Baskar and Akhi Donthireddy (8-0), Sudhi Kumar and Bailey Higgins (8-1) and Jaden Harper and Madelyn Becker (8-1).

Clinching the match with singles wins were Baskar (6-0, 6-0) and Harper (6-1, 6-1). Lauren Statler also won 6-0, 6-1 as the match was clinched.

The remaining three singles players for the Lady Jays were all leading when the match was stopped.

Jefferson City (13-8), the No. 1 seed in the district, hosts No. 2 Helias at 4:30 p.m. today in the championship match at Washington Park.
