JAMESTOWN - The St. Elizabeth Lady Hornets used a strong defensive effort Tuesday to beat the Jamestown Lady Eagles 40-24 in the season opener for both teams.
St. Elizabeth never allowed more than eight points in a quarter, leading Jamestown 10-4 after one quarter, 22-10 at halftime and 30-18 at the end of the third quarter.
Harley Engelmeyer led the Lady Hornets with a double-double of 13 points and 17 rebounds. Maddie Wilde and Mara Struemph each added nine points.
Ginna Meisenheimer scored eight points to lead the Lady Eagles.
St. Elizabeth (1-0) will play Monday against Linn in the first round of the Eugene Tournament. The Lady Hornets are the No. 4 seed in the seven-team bracket.
Jamestown (0-1), the No. 7 seed in the Tipton Tournament, will play Monday against Russellville in the first round.
