Jefferson City tops Rock Bridge for district soccer title

COLUMBIA - The Jefferson City Jays claimed the Class 4 District 9 soccer tournament title Thursday night with a 2-1 win in penalty kicks against the Rock Bridge Bruins.

With the win, Jefferson City (17-5) advances to host Springfield Central (15-6) in the sectionals Tuesday night at Eddie Horn Field. Game time has yet to be announced. Springfield Central, the No. 3 seed, defeated fourth-seeded Waynesville 3-0 for the District 10 championship Thursday night.

Jefferson City took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Ethan Blake, assisted by Breck McGrail. Rock Bridge tied it with a goal with a little less than 12 minutes to go in regulation.

The two overtime periods were scoreless, sending the game to penalty kicks. It was tied at 3 after the first five shooters. After a miss in the sixth round, both teams scored in the seventh round. The Jays converted in the eighth round, while the Bruins had their shot go off the post.

Rock Bridge ends the season at 21-5.
