Calvary's Owens opens Class 1 tourney with an 88

SEDALIA - Calvary Lutheran's Sam Owens is in the top half of the individual standings following Monday's first round of the Class 1 state championships at Sedalia Country Club.

Owens, Calvary Lutheran's first boys golf state qualifier, is in a seven-way tie for 37th place after shooting a 16-over 88.

Eugene's Caden Anderson, the area's only other Class 1 state qualifier, is tied for 76th place out of 86 golfers with a 104.

Bishop LeBlond leads the team standings with a 316. Westran is second with a 333, followed by Van-Far's 337 and Iberia's 361 to round out the top-four teams.

Westran's Trey Burton holds a two-shot lead after carding a 2-under 70 in the first round. Miller's Presten Richardson is second with a 72.
