Upper Arlington takes seventh in Great 8 Classic with win against Northmont

Two Ohio high school separated by about 80 miles went head-to-head Sunday to wrap up their stay at the Joe Machens Great 8 Classic.

The Upper Arlington Golden Bears used a 24-point second quarter to pull away to a 68-44 win against the Northmont Thunderbolts in the seventh-place game at Fleming Fieldhouse.

Geoffrey Schoeny came off the bench to score a season-high 23 points for Upper Arlington. The sophomore guard made 8-of-9 shots - only missing a 3-point attempt in the fourth quarter - and added six rebounds in the win.

Schoeny, who entered the tournament averaging 4.7 points per game, scored 11 consecutive points in the first half for the Golden Bears, stretching their lead from 8-6 in the final minute of the first quarter to 19-10 midway through the second quarter.

Max Buckley scored just before the buzzer to give Upper Arlington (6-3) a 36-20 halftime lead. The Golden Bears were ahead 54-33 entering the fourth quarter.

Buckley finished with 12 points. Fred Wilkes II, who was named to the all-tournament team after the game, finished with eight points.

Patrick Ivory scored a team-high 21 points to lead Northmont (1-5), which shot just 1-of-13 from 3-point range. Jordan Smith added nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
