Benton gets past Hickman for seventh in Holiday Hoops Classic

The St. Joseph Benton Lady Cardinals took seventh place at the Jefferson Bank Holiday Hoops Classic on Sunday with a 42-28 win against Hickman at Rackers Fieldhouse.

Jaida Cox scored 18 points for Benton, and Kianna Herrera had a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double in the win. Hickman (2-7) was led by Maci Kuchta's 13 points.

The two teams traded leads during the first quarter, which ended tied at 8. Kuchta's basket with 5:43 left in the second quarter put the Kewpies ahead 10-9, but Cox answered with a 3 with 4:23 left in the half to take the lead for good.

Benton held a 17-14 advantage going into the break, and outscored Hickman 7-0 in the third quarter.

A pair of 3s from Detriann'a Jamison helped the Kewpies get to within 30-25 with 2:29 left in the game, but the Lady Cardinals ended the game on a 12-4 run.

Neither team had a good shooting day, as Benton went 2-of-13 from 3-point range and Hickman shot 2-of-11. The Kewpies' offense found a new gear in the final quarter, doubling their point total, but the Lady Cardinals shot 12-of-15 at the foul line in the game's final 4 minutes.

Herrera was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 16.7 points and eight rebounds per game. Kuchta averaged 14 points per game and was Hickman's selection for the all-tournament team.
