Shootout preview: Strong defense leading good start for Iberia boys

It's been all about defense so far this season for the Iberia Rangers.

"I'm happy with where our defense is right now," Iberia coach Nick Voss said as the Rangers prepare to take on the Fulton Hornets at 10 a.m. today in the River Region Credit Union Shootout at Fleming Fieldhouse. "It's helping us win ballgames."

Iberia (4-1) is allowing an average of 40.6 points to its opponents so far this season. After opening the season with a 65-57 loss to the Linn Wildcats, the Rangers have held their opponents in the 30s three times in their four-game winning streak, which included winning the Frisco League Tournament championship.

"Linn's a pretty solid team, we've been playing a lot better defensively after that," Voss said.

The Rangers are scoring a little more than 57 points per game. Zach Voss, a senior returning all-district and all-conference player, leads the way, totaling 12 points per contest. Ethan Blankenship is next at 10 per game.

"We have the tools to be a better offensive team," Nick Voss said. "We just need to take care of the ball a little better."

Iberia is coming off a 68-38 victory Tuesday against School of the Osage. Zach Voss had 20 points in the win, while Blankenship totaled 15.

"We haven't had a lot of games like Osage, where someone stood out on offense," Nick Voss said. "It's been balanced, we have several guys that are averaging between seven and nine points, and that's a good thing."

Fulton, coached by former Jefferson City Jays player Justin Gilmore, is 3-2 after falling 53-45 to Marshall on Friday night.

The Hornets are totaling 52 points per game while allowing just under 42.

It's a balanced scoring attack as well for Fulton as four different Hornets - seniors John Adams and Tyler Sayler and freshman Joshua Reams and Walker Gohring - have each led Fulton in scoring in a game this season.

"It's been a pretty successful season so far," Voss said. "We're going to look to keep that going against Fulton."

Iberia fell 70-67 to California in the Shootout last season. This is Fulton's first appearance in the event.
