Full day of basketball action on tap for annual Shootout

Two rematches and three new teams highlight this season's River Region Credit Union Shootout, which takes place Saturday, Dec. 14, at Fleming Fieldhouse.

The 10th annual Shootout will feature six games, starting at 10 a.m. with the Iberia Rangers taking on the Fulton Hornets.

This will be Fulton's first appearance in the Shootout, while Iberia returns after dropping a 70-67 decision last season to California.

At 11:30 a.m., the Hermann Bearcats face the Cuba Wildcats. Cuba is making its first Shootout appearance and the Bearcats return for the first time since 2015, when they defeated Versailles 67-65 in overtime.

At 1 p.m., the Blair Oaks Lady Falcons will square off against the Hermann Lady Bearcats.

"Hermann is a great opponent, we have so much respect for their program," Blair Oaks coach Darren Heckman said. "They always seem to be tall and long that's a strong fundamental basketball team that will make you pay for making any mistake."

Blair Oaks defeated Hermann 53-40 in the Shootout last year.

"It was a good game last year and we know it will be again," Heckman said.

At 2:30 p.m., the California Lady Pintos and the South Callaway Lady Bulldogs will meet in another rematch from last year.

California defeated South Callaway 55-39 last season.

This is the fourth straight season the Lady Bulldogs have played in the Shootout.

"It's a great showcase for a lot of local talent, not only on our team, but those from around the area," South Callaway coach Darren Humphrey said. "It's a great opportunity for us and the other teams to showcase what we can do in front of a great crowd in a great venue."

The Lady Pintos will be making their eighth straight Shootout appearance and ninth overall, the most of any team.

"This is going to be a great test for us," California coach Bobby Sangster said. "South Callaway is a great team with a lot of weapons that will provide a big challenge."

At 4 p.m., the St. Elizabeth Hornets are slated to play the California Pintos.

St. Elizabeth, ranked No. 3 in Class 1, is returning to the Shootout for the first time since 2013. Both of their previous appearances have been against Harrisburg.

"As a player, my senior we got to play in it and it was fun," St. Elizabeth assistant coach Caleb Heckemeyer said. "It's going to be great for these guys to experience that."

California is appearing in the Shootout for the seventh time, winning four of its six games at Fleming Fieldhouse.

The Pintos have won their last three games in the Shootout. Before beating Iberia last season, they defeated Eldon in 2017 and Hermann in 2014.

"It's a nice atmosphere," California coach Ron Lebel said. "My kids enjoy coming here and getting to play on a big court against some good teams."

The final game at 5:30 p.m. will feature the Capital City Lady Cavaliers against the Tipton Lady Cardinals.

Capital City won its first game in program history earlier this week, a 24-17 victory against Kirksville at the Marshall Tournament.

"We guarded really well and they just never really got anything going," Capital City coach Ryan Madison said. "In the second half we played a little bit better offensively."

Tipton, ranked No. 5 in Class 2, defeated Belle 69-29 in its only appearance in the Shootout in 2013.

"When I got the email last February inviting us to come up and play Capital City in the Shootout, we immediately accepted," Tipton coach Jason Culpepper said.
