TIPTON - The top-seeded Tipton Lady Cardinals began the Tipton Tournament on Monday with a 91-21 first-round win against the La Monte Lady Vikings.
Abby Backes came close to recording a triple-double in Tipton's season opener, finishing with 39 points, 10 steals and seven assists.
Myra Claas added 16 points for the Lady Cardinals, while Alexa Jurgensmeyer had 15 points and five steals and Gracie Wierman finished with 14 points and six rebounds.
Tipton (1-0), ranked No. 5 in Class 2, will host fourth-seeded Chamois in the tournament semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
