Lincoln women snap long road losing streak

LIBERTY - The Lincoln women's basketball team snapped a 32-game road losing streak Saturday afternoon, as the Blue Tigers beat the William Jewell Cardinals 65-50.

Lincoln's last road win came Dec. 18, 2018, a 73-48 decision at Upper Iowa. It is also the Blue Tigers' first win in four tries in the all-time series against the Cardinals.

William Jewell led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Lincoln took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by AJ Bradley in the final minute of the second quarter and went into halftime ahead 24-23.

The Blue Tigers never trailed in the second half.

The Cardinals cut the lead to two points on two occasions in the third quarter, and a 3-pointer by Katie Knock made the score 34-32. Niyah Jackson's layup pushed Lincoln's lead back to two possessions, triggering an 8-2 run for the Blue Tigers.

Lincoln led 42-36 at the start of the fourth quarter and outscored William Jewell 23-14 in the final 10 minutes. The Blue Tigers shot 14-of-17 at the free-throw line in the quarter, with Imani Jones leading the way by going 6-of-8 at the line in the fourth.

Le'Yanna McGinnis led the Blue Tigers with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Ayreona Carter also reached double figures with 12 points, shooting 6-of-8 at the free-throw line.

Lincoln finished with 36 points off the bench. Hya Haywood added nine points and six assists.

Lea Finn scored a team-high 11 points for William Jewell (0-4). The Blue Tigers forced 24 turnovers and outrebounded the Cardinals 38-28.

Lincoln (3-2) will wrap up its non-conference schedule Tuesday against Division III Westminster in Fulton.

Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
