Renegades top Mustangs 6-2 in 11 innings

ST. JOSEPH - There was hardly any activity along the third-base line during the first nine innings Friday night between the Jefferson City Renegades and the St. Joseph Mustangs.

Then it turned out to be a busy place in extra innings.

Both teams scored a run in the 10th inning to break the scoreless deadlock, but the Renegades scored five times in the top of the 11th inning to come away with a 6-2 win against the Mustangs in MINK League play at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joseph had a runner reach third base in both the first and second innings, as well as the seventh, but couldn't push a run across the plate.

Jefferson City did not have a runner reach third base until extra innings.

That came in the top of the 10th, when Caden Diel drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a groundout and then moved to third on a single by Carter Mize. Diel scored on an error on the same play to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs answered in the bottom half of the inning. Michael Paule hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on Jake Grauberger's walk, stole third base and then scored on Ike Book's sacrifice fly to left field, tying the game at 1.

In the 11th, the Renegades batted around the order, starting with a leadoff walk to Josef Keilholz. Ale Claro reached on an infield error, both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt and Keilholz scored on an RBI single by Diel to give Jefferson City a 2-1 lead.

Kaden Helsel singled to score two more runs for the Renegades. Diel added another run and Helsel scored on Andrew Paten's single to extend the lead to 6-1.

The Mustangs put the first three runners on base with no outs to open the bottom of the 11th. St. Joseph plated a run on a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a four-run game, but the Renegades followed that with a double play to end the game, handing the defending MINK League champions their first loss of the season.

Jefferson City collected five of its 14 hits in extra innings. Helsel finished 3-for-6 with three singles and two RBI, while Mize and Hamilton Anderson each had a single and a double. Claro and Diel each hit two singles in the win.

Jacob Davis started on the mound for the Renegades. In six scoreless innings of work, he struck out five while scattering three hits with one walk.

Kaleb Haley pitched 1 innings of relief, walking one and striking out one, while Shane Fontenot pitched the next 1 innings, walking one and striking out two to send the game to extra innings.

Austin Brewer was the winning pitcher, as he pitched the 10th and came back out for the 11th. He allowed two runs on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts.

Mick Vonfeldt closed the 11th to secure the win for the Renegades.

Drake Kanallakan matched Davis with six scoreless innings for St. Joseph (1-1), allowing four hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Jefferson City (3-0) returns to Vivion Field tonight for a doubleheader against the Clarinda A's. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
