With a little more than a week remaining in the regular season, the Jefferson City Renegades don't have to worry about making the MINK League playoffs. They're in.
The MINK League announced Friday the Nevada Griffons are canceling the rest of their season, due to a positive COVID-19 test within the organization.
"After consulting with their local health department, the team would not be able to return in time to participate in the 2021 MINK League Playoffs," the MINK League said in a press release.
Six of the eight teams in the MINK League make the playoffs, three from each division. Nevada is a member of the South Division, which also includes Joplin, Sedalia and Jefferson City. Those three teams are all guaranteed to make the playoffs, which are scheduled to begin July 26.
"It is with great disappointment that the season for the Griffons has ended," MINK League commissioner Ron Rodriguez said in a press release. "We wish nothing but the best for the players, coaches, staff, fans, and the Nevada community."
Nevada dropping out for the rest of the 2021 regular season makes a big impact on the Renegades' remaining schedule.
Jefferson City was slated to host Nevada tonight and Tuesday, then play the Griffons on the road Wednesday and Thursday.
That leaves a Sunday home doubleheader against Des Moines and home games next Friday and Saturday against Joplin for Jefferson City.
"Stay tuned for some schedule changes!" the Renegades announced Friday night on their Facebook page.
