FULTON — Westminster senior catcher Derek Shikles was named the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball hitter of the week, the league announced Monday.
Shikles (New Bloomfield High School) posted a .600 batting average (12-for-20) in the Blue Jays' past five games, finishing with a multihit performance in each game. During that stretch, he scored 10 runs and had 12 RBI.
Shikles hit a two-run home run in Saturday's 5-1 win on Senior Day against Iowa Wesleyan, then belted a three-run home run to walk it off in Sunday's 13-2 run-rule victory against the Tigers.
In 28 games this season, Shikles is batting .300 (35-for-106) with 23 runs scored, 22 RBI and four home runs.
In Saturday's Senior Day win, Westminster senior Drew Boessen (Helias High School) pitched a nine-inning complete game for the Blue Jays. He struck out 11 batters while allowing an unearned run on four hits and one walk, throwing 89 of his 113 pitches for strikes.
It was just the third start in 14 appearances for Boessen, who has a 2-2 record with three saves. In 34 innings, he has a 2.36 ERA with 35 strikeouts.
In Sunday's 13-2 win, Westminster sophomore first baseman Parker Schnieders (Helias High School) went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, his fourth homer of the season.
In 28 games this season, Schnieders is batting .255 (25-for-98) with 19 RBI and 12 runs scored.
Also in that game, freshman catcher Coltin Green (St. Elizabeth High School) went 2-for-4 with three RBI. For the season, Green has a .243 batting average (25-for-103) in 28 games, hitting a pair of home runs with 13 RBI and 17 runs scored.
Westminster freshman pitcher Trent Morrow (Russellville High School) pitched a complete game in Sunday's run-rule win. In seven innings, Morrow allowed two runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Morrow has a 2-1 record in seven pitching appearances with a 2.88 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 25 innings.
Junior third baseman Hayden Hirschvogel (Jefferson City High School) went 1-for-4 in Sunday's win. He also had a season-high four RBI on April 21 in the Blue Jays' 14-3 win against Nebraska Wesleyan.
In 24 games this season, Hirschvogel is hitting .266 (21-for-79) with 13 runs scored and five RBI.
In Sunday's first game of the doubleheader against Iowa Wesleyan, Westminster freshman Dawson Koch (Russellville High School) picked up the victory in a 10-4 win. In 5 innings, Koch allowed four runs on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts.
Koch improved his season record to 4-3. In eight appearances, he has a 5.40 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 36 innings.
