Dear Editor:

Kudos to Councilman Scott Spencer; wish he represented the First Ward or there were more like him regarding his challenges to the budget approval process. He is a breath of fresh air, but as pre-destined, his fight to get fiscal responsibility back into the city thinking on spending is just a futile effort. The progressives elected and the city department heads do not have the mindset of scrutiny of spending or doing more with less as a default mode. For them, it is tax-and-spend, period. We taxpayers must elect those who will only see to our best interests and the most critical public needs first before launching into new nice-to-have, but not necessarily required, equipment, systems or staff increases. A trip earlier this year by the mayor and park staff to Arkansas is a typical example a hoot. Could not a conference call be arranged with the respective city park's staff to learn their salary structure? I believe Mr. Spencer in his many years of city service could cite multiple examples of waste that could be curbed. I have in several letters prior to this
