Your Opinion: Questions for the school board

Curtis Thompson

Jefferson City

Dear Editor:

I hope parents, and students ask the Jefferson City School Board these questions.

Why did the board allow the racist 2020 statement about current events to remain as the position of the board, in that it called for "listening sessions with people of color" when such a request limited to white people would be rightfully condemned?

Why did the board keep "equity" and rejected "equality" as its goal, when equality is for what this country stands?

Why did the board vote to retain a Marxist website as a resource when it was demonstrated to support fraudulent racist ideological history like the discredited 1619 Project?

Why did the board apparently vote in closed session to reject a resolution to protect its students from forced indoctrination promoting racist, sexist and violent beliefs?

Why has the board refused to provide lesson plans in violation of Section 170.231 RSMo wherein the law states that "all public school instructional materialor any public school research or experimentation program or project, shall be available for inspection by any person"?

Why did the board approve fraudulent minutes from its June meeting after it was pointed out to the board that the minutes were in error, and why did it allow the vote to be on the consent agenda after the mistakes were demonstrated to it?

Why has the board refused to produce documents from "equity seminars" it has required its staff to attend?

Why did the board's superintendent promise on July 8 that "(T) he HR office is collecting your sunshine request information from 6/24 regarding the equity training. They are finalizing this and you will receive this information in the middle of next week," but has never produced a single document and the date of this LTE is 12 days later?

Why did the board hire attorneys from St. Louis and Columbia to defend it against requests for documents under the Sunshine Law when it wasn't defending a lawsuit about those violations, and why did it spend thousands of taxpayer dollars for those attorneys?

Why did the superintendent tell citizens that curriculum would not be discussed at the July Board meeting, schedule two different start times for that meeting, and then discuss curriculum although not on the published agenda?

Could it be the board is hiding the truth by openly violating the law?

When will we finally get answers?

When we replace the board!
