Dear Editor:

Long time slogans in America continue to change.

Portland Oregon's Mayor Ted Wheeler recently revised a slogan familiar to many of us. President Teddy Roosevelt, in a Jan 26, 1900, letter to Henry Sprague, wrote, "I have always been fond of the West African proverb: "Speak softly and carry the big stick; you will go far." Mayor Wheeler's version is "Run off at the mouth while armed with a limp noodle." It is his method of dealing with months of rioting in Portland.

In December, he once again allowed rioters to take over a section of Portland, he tweeted, "I am authorizing the Portland police to use all lawful means to end the illegal occupation on North Mississippi Avenue and to hold those violating our community's laws accountable. There will be no autonomous zone in Portland."

Check out the video footage at news.yahoo.com/portland-mayor-ripped-allowing-red-110553634.html; it sure looks like an autonomous zone to me. Later Wheeler apologized for his statement and promised to not evict the people who were illegally squatting in the home, a slap in the legal property owner's face. After the "pay-off" the barricades started coming down on Dec. 20.

The sniveling Democrats running the city are forcing the police to stand by and let the rights of Portland property owners be trampled, but it is difficult to feel sorry for Portland residents. In an Aug. 27, 1811, letter, French lawyer, diplomat, writer and philosopher Joseph de Maistre penned a familiar quote, "In a democracy people get the leaders they deserve." Portland voters just reelected Wheeler.

Multiple Portland businesses were damaged during New Year's Eve rioting. In a Jan. 1 press conference Wheeler said, "My good-faith efforts at de-escalation have been met with ongoing violence and even scorn from radical Antifa and anarchists. In response, it will be necessary to use additional tools and to push the limits of the tools we already have to bring the criminal destruction and violence to an end."

I wonder what he has in mind. After seven months allowing the violence to continue, will he try something new, direct cash pay-offs to the rioters?

Welcome to a nation run by liberals/Democrats.
