Your Opinion: Old-school ballot counting advocated

Dear Editor:

Maybe we Americans will eventually lose our democratic process. That seems to me to be inevitable. So maybe we should slip quietly into whatever system lies beyond the casting of meaningful ballots and leave the world free to meet its future.

However, if a fight is what we fancy, then I recommend we revert entirely to the methods of voting and counting votes that were used 150 years ago. If those methods require a great deal of human labor, and if they require that we deal with great inconvenience, then maybe that's the price of keeping foreign and domestic enemies of our democratic system at bay.

No electronic device is safe. They all emanate signals that are readable in principle. In order to ride our democratic era as far into the future as possible, I recommend the use of paper ballots that are filled out by hand and counted by hand, with the resulting subtotals never being electronically processed or transmitted.
