Your Opinion: Words reflect beliefs

Dear Editor:

The death of Roberta McCain, John McCain's mother, at 108 years of age brought to mind the Vietnam War and John McCain's five-plus years as a prisoner of war.

In a way the war in Vietnam is our war. Today, most of us either lived through the Vietnam War or have parents or grandparents who did.

President Trump called John McCain a loser and stated that he was not a war hero because he was captured. The president's disdain for the military is not limited to John McCain. He says people in the military are suckers and losers. The president is purported to have said, "Why should I go to that cemetery? It's filled with losers," referring to a military cemetery located outside of Paris that is filled with the graves of U.S. Marines killed during WWI.

Like most Americans, I lost family and friends in Vietnam. I do not think of them as suckers and losers. The president's words about the military reflect his beliefs and that just does not sit right with me. You?
