Our Opinion: Celebrate responsibly this Fourth

Many times before holidays, we've warned our readers against drinking and driving and urged them to take other driving safety measures. One safety measure we'd like to add this Fourth of July is social distancing.

Since Missouri reopened June 16, COVID-19 cases have predictably increased. Here in Cole County, where we had just one active case a couple weeks ago, there are now 11.

That means if you celebrate the Fourth of July in social settings, take precautions to keep yourself and others safe. That means social distancing - staying 6 feet away from others - and wearing protective masks.

As for driving, Independence Day weekend is one of the busiest summer holidays, as well as one of the most deadly.

Alcohol has traditionally been the cause of impaired driving, but law enforcement officials now are seeing more illegal and prescription drugs as well as some over-the-counter medicines.

Agencies including the Missouri Highway Patrol and the Jefferson City Police Department plan increased enforcement over the weekend.

"No warnings. No excuses. If you drive impaired, you will be arrested. Don't risk losing your independence by choosing to drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs," according to a Missouri Department of Transportation news release.

People often have a hard time recovering financially from the cost of a crash or arrest, MoDOT said. Violators risk killing or harming others, facing jail time, the loss of their driver licenses, higher insurance rates and dozens of other unanticipated expenses from attorney fees, fines and court costs, car towing and repairs, and lost time at work.

On this Fourth of July, we're not just celebrating our country's freedom, but our new-found freedom to go where we want and do what we want. That includes barbecues, swimming and attending fairs/festivals.

However, that freedom comes with responsibility. Take precautions to keep not only you and your family safe, but others who might be celebrating with you or near you.
