Your Opinion: Climate change solutions

Dear Editor:

I found a book at the library I would like to recommend that may help people understand some of the confusion that exists regarding climate change: "The Water Will Come" written by Jeff Goodell. Jeff Goodell has been recognized for his research and literary work around this issue. He is the author of a number of books and one that I plan to read in the future is "How to Cool The Planet: Geoengineering and the Audacious Quest to Fix Earth's Climate," which won the 2011 Grantham Prize Award of Special Merit.

As a former middle school science teacher, I found the book to be a good read that anyone could understand the study of climate change. After three years of research and his travels across 12 countries around the world, he employs facts, science, and rst-person, on-the-ground journalism to show vivid scenes from what already is becoming a water world.

I rmly believe that global warming and climate change is a real threat and we need to address it today. Fossil fuels are nite and we should nd alternative sources of energy. For the sake of our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, we need to save our planet.

Mr. Goodell likened the debate over global warming and climate change to the arguments over the existence of the destruction of the ozone layer. After more than 10 years, Republican President Reagan and British Prime Minister Thatcher were two of the world leaders to get a global agreement among the countries of the world to ban the manufacture and use of chemicals that were destroying the ozone layer and they helped save our planet. The two American scientists who rst discovered the threat to our planet regarding the destruction of the ozone layer were awarded a Noble Prize for their scientific work.

Finally, I would ask the editor of the Opinion Page when you pick one of the two or three people who write in constantly, leave out the name of the person in the title of their LTE. When you use one of your favorites to respond to a LTE to ridicule others folks LTE by name, in my opinion that is wrong. It gets disgusting to pick up the News Tribune every day to see these same two or three people responding to other people's LTEs.
