Our Opinion: Habitat steps it up

In the half year since the tornado devastated parts of Jefferson City, we've heard a lot of people talk about the need for affordable housing in the city.

River City Habitat for Humanity is one organization doing something about it.

The organization works with eligible low-income families to build quality low-cost houses. The homes are sold to the families without profit, and financed with no interest.

As we reported Wednesday, the organization is doubling its annual efforts in 2020 by holding a "Road to Recovery Blitz Build." It typically builds four or five homes a year. Next year, it intends to build an additional four at these locations: 902 Jackson St., 914 Jackson St. and 415 E. Ashley St. (at the corner of Ashley and Jackson streets), as well as a yet-to-be-determined location.

Call the organization at 573-635-8439 to find out more and to learn about a Dec. 14 information session it will hold concerning applications.

What can you do? Two things. If you know of a family who needs housing, let them know to apply. They can call the organization at 573-635-8439 and attend the information session. Applications will be due Jan. 10.

Also, consider helping River City Habitat for Humanity, either financially or by donating your time to help with the blitz build. Many volunteers will be needed.

Churches already are committing to help the faith-based organization, which is seeking financial help from businesses as well.

The city could also help with both demolition and building. The home on Ashley Street will be called the "Mayor's Build."

River City Habitat for Humanity has been an asset to our community since it started in 1992. We're glad to see it working to provide affordable housing in the wake of the May 22 tornado, and we urge you to support the efforts in any way you can.
