Cole County reports seven 'breakthrough' infections

Since Feb. 1, Cole County has had 360 positive cases of COVID-19. Per state records, seven of those cases were fully vaccinated, six with Pfizer and one with Moderna.

Those figures were released Monday by the Cole County Health Department after staff calculated how many of the county's fully vaccinated residents have tested positive for COVID-19.

Last week, a report came out that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asked states at the start of April to instruct local health departments and health systems to collect real-time information on "breakthrough infections."

Cole County Health Department Director Kristi Campbell said they hadn't been tracking when the CDC's announcement came out, but the nurses at the department went back through cases in the county and recorded whether the positive case was vaccinated.

Campbell noted the cases were compared to the vaccination records her staff had access to in the state's database. She said it's not 100 percent accurate because depending on where the person received the vaccine, the CCHD might not have access to the record of it.

Campbell said the state's vaccine database, Show Me Vax, does not include COVID-19 vaccines that are being administered out of state or through the federal vaccine allocation.

"That means that if someone receives their vaccine at a VA hospital or clinic or at big box store like Walmart or Hy-Vee, those doses are not recorded in the state database," she said. "So, we are not able to know for sure if every positive case received their vaccine unless we would call and ask them. That also means that we have a higher percent vaccinated than what is reported on the state's website (covidvaccine.mo.gov/data)."

As of Monday afternoon, the state numbers showed Cole County with 47,739 COVID-19 doses administered. Of that number, 27,196 had received their first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine and 21,836 had received their second shot of those vaccines or the single dose of Johnson and Johnson.

The percentage of the Cole County population initiating vaccination was 35.4 percent and the percent of the population completing their vaccination was 28.5 percent. Over the last seven days, 1,245 doses of COVID vaccine have been administered in Cole County.
