The crowd cheered Wednesday evening as Jefferson City High School junior and senior girls played against each other at the homecoming powder puff football game at Adkins Stadium.

The juniors were winning in the first half, but the seniors stepped up in the second half and ended up winning 19 to 18.

During halftime, the homecoming court was introduced and the king and queen were announced. Rose Spalding was announced as homecoming queen, and Phoenix Lawson was announced as homecoming king.

Senior girls then performed at the senior sing, which has been a JCHS tradition for more than 50 years. They danced to a compilation of songs, ranging from "Fergalicious" by Fergie to "Congratulations" by Post Malone.

The queen and king's court presentation and senior sing are normally included in the assembly before the homecoming football game, but this year's assembly will be a video students will watch Friday during school.

Kenedy Fischer, who participated in the senior sing, said she didn't expect to have events like this because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but she was glad the students and staff planned this event and made the most out of it.

"I thought it was super fun," she said. "I think all the seniors had a lot of fun, too, and I think it was a good opportunity to come out and show what we got."

Kenedy's mom, Stacia Fischer, came to watch her daughter and her son, Wyatt Fischer, who is on the homecoming court. She said it felt amazing to watch her children at the event, and she enjoyed seeing the students have fun.

"I thought it was great for the kids to get a chance to enjoy their senior year and just be with friends," she said.

JCHS freshman Alexis Barnes said the event was more fun and energetic than she expected, and she enjoyed watching the game and the senior sing. She said she's glad the school is still holding some homecoming events like this amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"As a freshman, I really wanted to come to these things since it's my first year, and I didn't know what it would be like," she said. "I'm glad that we can still have it similar to what it usually is."
