There were no active cases of COVID-19 reported in Cole County as of Sunday and through Monday afternoon.

"It's very good news and I think it shows the measures we have been doing have been working," Cole County Health Director Kristi Campbell said. "I think the data also shows the virus is not as contagious as first thought."

Since the pandemic began locally in March, the county have seen a total of 54 cases reported, with 53 people who recovered and one who died, according to the county Health Department.

Campbell said health officials anticipate there will be more cases of the virus.

"From the beginning we said the measures we implemented wouldn't eradicate the virus and we'll continue to have cases," Campbell said. "They have been done to minimize risks and slow the spread of the virus."

The Health Department is working to do more education about COVID-19, Campbell said.

"We've come out to talk with businesses who are trying to reopen; we've gone to county offices to talk with them about how to minimize the risks for their staffs and the public," Campbell said. "We're meeting with school officials this week about dealing with the virus."

Campbell said she believes more people are following social-distancing protocols when they are out in the community.

"I think they also realize the benefit of good hand hygiene," she added. "Our local hospitals are doing COVID testing on everyone who is coming in for elective surgeries. So far we haven't seen any positive results from those."

St. Mary's Hospital officials reported that as of Sunday the Jefferson City hospital had tested a total of 1,369 people for COVID-19, with 21 tests pending and 73 positive results recorded.

Capital Region Medical Center officials said they had tested 2,323 people for COVID-19 as of Monday afternoon, with 102 positive results recorded.

Positive cases recorded at the hospitals are reported to the counties where the tested patients live.
