Jefferson City's first Thursday Night Live of the season will take place this week after the May event was canceled due to concerns about the coronavirus and orders against public gatherings.

Springfield-based '90s cover band The Mixtapes will headline the event, with local opening act CJ Curt.

Vendors will be spaced around the block to help with social distancing, and hand-washing and hand sanitizer stations will be set up throughout the festival area.

Angela Nale, of the Downtown Jefferson City Association, said they will encourage safety for attendees.

"I would like to think that everyone's used to social distancing by now and they're not going to risk anything and they're going to be aware of their surroundings," Nale said.

Other than those changes, the event will be similar to previous years.

"We're excited to be able to bring Thursday Night Live back and bring people back downtown in Jefferson City and just to get people excited to get out," Nale said. "Everyone is tired of being stuck inside, and they're ready to get out and have some fun - and be safe, of course."

Organizers also hope the event will drive business to downtown shops and restaurants that have suffered from extended closures or reduced hours over the previous months.

The stage will be set up at Madison and High streets facing Monroe Street. The 2oo block of High Street will be halfway closed beginning that afternoon at about 1 p.m.

Gates for the events will open at 6:30 p.m. with the first performance beginning at 7 p.m.

Admission to the event costs $2 for children ages 4-12 and $5 for those older than 13. The price includes an admission wristband and a beverage cup for those older than 21.

Thursday Night Live will be on the third Thursday of each month through September.

Performers for future events include Shiloh Country Band on July 16, Soulroot Band on Aug. 20 and The Cherry Pistols on Sept. 10.

Opening acts for the future performances will be announced later once they are confirmed.
