Thorpe Gordon Elementary School is getting a new roof after damage from the May 22 tornado.

The building at 1101 Jackson St. sustained minor damage, as did five other Jefferson City School District properties.

Missouri Builders Service of Jefferson City began full roof replacement after the JCSD Board of Education approved a $169,096 contract last month. The roof will be completed by Dec. 6, according to the contract.

The EF-3 tornado also blew the roof off the Adkins Stadium press box, penetrated the roof at Jefferson City Academic Center, broke windows at Nichols Career Center and severely damaged Simonsen 9th Grade Center.

The school board declared Simonsen surplus property in October. The building is currently unstable, JC Schools Chief Financial Officer Jason Hoffman told the News Tribune in an email last week.

"The roof is enclosed with a temporary roof, and most of the windows were blown out and are boarded up," Hoffman said. "We are working with our insurance company to negotiate a fair amount for us to be reimbursed to bring the building back to the condition it was in before the tornado."

While the building is not officially for sale, some have expressed interest in the future of the 81-year-old school.

"We haven't received any offers for purchase of the building, but we have been approached by several individuals who have expressed an interest," Hoffman said.

The district has received $3.5 million in insurance funds for tornado damage, according to the October budget. About $1 million was spent on damage at Adkins Stadium and securing Simonsen, Hoffman said previously.
