Car break-in suspect dies, guard run over outside hospital

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A car-break in suspect has died after being shot Wednesday and a security guard was run over in a confrontation near a St. Louis children's hospital, authorities said.

The suspect was shot in the chest around 1:25 a.m. near SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.

The hospital guard also was taken to a hospital in critical condition. St. Louis police are investigating. No other details were immediately released about the shooting, including the name of the suspect or the guard.

Cardinal Glennon spokesperson Molly Eime said the hospital was cooperating with authorities and didn't directly comment on what happened.

"We appreciate the courage of our security officer and our prayers are with all involved," she said.
