KIRKWOOD, Mo. (AP) - A former coach for a prominent St. Louis region soccer club has been charged with statutory rape after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old player.
Hugh Patrick McVey, 31, was charged Thursday after a joint investigation in St. Charles and St. Louis counties. He faces a total of seven counts of statutory rape and statutory sodomy.
McVey was appointed head coach of a Lou Fusz girls soccer team in June, The team won the under-16 U.S. national championship last year with McVey as assistant coach, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
When asked about McVey on Thursday, the club said a volunteer coach had been removed after the club received a report that the coach had an inappropriate relationship with a player.
The player obtained an order of protection last month against McVey.
Brian Millikan, a lawyer for McVey, declined to comment and McVey did not respond to a message, the Post-Dispatch reported.
McVey was on probation for a 2019 misdemeanor resisting arrest and DWI charge at the time of the alleged relationship, according to court documents.
