Democratic state Sen. Schupp to challenge U.S. Rep. Wagner

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Democratic state Sen. Jill Schupp says she plans to run for the U.S. House seat currently held by Republican Rep. Ann Wagner.

Schupp, of Creve Coeur, announced her entry into the campaign for Missouri's 2nd Congressional District on Tuesday evening. Schupp served in the Missouri House from 2008 to 2014, when she was elected to the state Senate after narrowly defeating Republican Jay Ashcroft, who is now secretary of state. She easily won re-election in 2018.

Wagner, of Ballwin, has served in 2nd District since 2012. She was easily re-elected in 2014 and 2016 but beat challenger Cort VanOstran by only 4% in 2018.

The district encompasses parts of St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson counties.

Wagner's spokesman, Stephen Puetz, noted in a statement that Schupp said in June that she didn't plan to run. She said Wagner's campaign would not comment about a Democratic primary months before the election.
