Socket is expanding its residential fiber services to homes in Jefferson City, the telephone and internet service provider announced Thursday.

With this expansion through its new fiberoptic network, Socket will have the most extensive home fiber network in Jefferson City, according to a Socket news release.

“With this expansion into the Jefferson City market, Socket is proud to be the largest provider of residential fiber,” Socket President Carson Coffman said in the news release. “Socket is committed to our investment in constructing critical internet infrastructure in an around Jefferson City. Our fiber network will allow customers to power everything from streaming entertainment services to laptops and tablets.”

Socket announced the expansion Thursday at a ribbon-cutting ceremony near the location of one of its fiberhoods in Jefferson City, the Diamond Ridge neighborhood.

Construction is completed in the Moniticello, Quail Valley and Saddlebrook neighborhoods. Areas under construction include Covington Gardens, Henwick Lane and Deer Park. Construction is scheduled to start soon on Diamond Ridge, Meadows by the Club and West Landwehr Hills.

This phase of construction will bring fiber services to 18,000 Jefferson City residents, which includes 18 neighborhoods of 4,000 homes, according to the news release. After the first phase of the project, Socket will continue to expand in more areas throughout Jefferson City in 2022.

Socket, headquartered in Columbia, began providing services to Jefferson City 25 years ago, and the internet services it provides have grown over time, Coffman said. It began providing fiber internet to Jefferson City businesses in 2013.

Fiber transmits data by sending light along thin glass fibers. The expansion will provide up to one gigabit per second of internet service, as fiber can transmit data at much higher speeds than DSL or cable-based internet, according to the news release.

Socket is doing similar projects in 27 counties across Central Missouri. To see if the service is available in your area or to receive updates on the expansion, visit socket.net/fiberhood.
