A fire on the roof of Goldschmidt Cancer Center Tuesday afternoon caused minor damage.

According to Jefferson City Fire Department reports, fire crews were dispatched just before 4:40 p.m. after a person spotted the fire at the center on Southwest Boulevard and called it in. Another person pulled the fire alarm and fire officials said the building was almost completely evacuated by the time they got on the scene.

The first fire unit on the scene made access to the roof with a ground ladder and extinguished the fire on the roof. Additional crews made access into the building to ensure evacuation was complete and to check for fire inside of the building. No fire had spread into the building and there was only light smoke in the main lobby of the Cancer Center.

The fire was under control within 5 minutes and firefighters remained on scene to ensure the fire was out, act to mitigate water damage and investigate the cause of the fire. After 30 minutes the occupants were allowed to return to the building and fire units remained on the scene for over an hour to complete operations. There was "minimal" damage to the interior of the building. There were no injuries.

The fire was caused by welding related to construction on the roof. Hot materials caught a wood pallet on fire and the fire extended into the roof components.
