Installation planned for Ellis-Porter sculpture

Jefferson City will have a new piece of art in Ellis-Porter Riverside Park starting next week.

The piece, Love is the Answer by Sandy Friedman, is part of the Sculpture on the Move, which rotates art around the state.

This will be the second piece to reside in the park through this program.

Each piece stays for two years before moving to another city and Jefferson City can put in to receive a replacement, said Amy Schroeder, community relations manager for the Jefferson City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department.

Love is the Answer features three interlocking hearts and will be placed near the playground in Ellis-Porter Riverside Park.

Currently, it is scheduled to be installed Tuesday.

The city has two pieces through the Sculpture on the Move project. The other is on Capitol Avenue near Lafayette Street.

Schroeder said normally this type of art can cost cities $25,000-$30,000, but because this is a rental program, it costs $1,000 each year per sculpture.

Artists submit pieces for the project, Schroeder said, and the Cultural Arts Commission goes through the list to pick favorites. It's then decided through a lottery system which cities can choose first.

Schroeder said the two sculptures are on a rotating basis. The Capitol Avenue piece will go through that process next year.

"It's only fitting, I think, with what's going on in the world," Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Andre Grinston said.
