The Cole County Commission approved two traffic pattern changes at its regular meeting Tuesday.

One would prohibit parking in the Castle Rock Drive cul-de-sac to address trailers and equipment blocking the safe turnaround of school buses and larger vehicles in the cul de sac.

Some of the people requesting this reported that materials on trailers parked in the cul-de-sac having been blowing off and get into the road and onto neighboring properties.

Cole County Public Works Director Eric Landwehr said the cul-de-sac was put in around 2010 as part of improvements to Castle Rock Road. It was constructed to permit school buses to turn around.

Landwehr also cited the county's traffic code which states boats and trailers shall not be parked upon the improved section of any public street. The county's traffic code states parking in excess of 72 consecutive hours is not allowed, and parking can be prohibited at all times and at designated locations by court order.

The commission also approved installing yield signs at some intersections in Osage City where there are currently no stop or yield intersections. The major traffic pattern is from Route J over the railroad tracks and on to Engineers Road, where cabins along the Osage River are located.

The commission approved the safety board's recommendation to install yield signs on Osage High, Osage Hickory and Osage Fourth streets.

Landwehr noted public works crews will be doing overlays of all the streets in the late summer or early fall in Osage City, and they'll also be updating the street signs in town.

He said both traffic pattern changes were recommended for approval by the county's traffic and safety advisory board.

Anytime the board makes a recommendation for regulatory signing, a public hearing is held and the County Commission has to approve the board's recommendation, then sign a court order to make the change.
