The 62nd and 65th Regiments Legacy Foundation is receiving relief after losing its office in the 2019 tornado.

The Jefferson City Planning and Zoning Committee approved the rezoning for a property the organization purchased that would allow the residential home to be used as an office. The rezoning request was forwarded to the City Council.

The foundation, which provides scholarships to Lincoln University students, purchased the property in the 700 block of Lafayette Street after it became available through an estate, foundation Vice President Jack Markway said.

After losing its first home in the tornado, he said, the foundation had a temporary office space that didn't meet its privacy needs.

"We purchased (the Lafayette Street property), and through volunteers, a lot of paint and elbow grease, have totally cleaned it up," he said. "As an example, we've hauled 15 big loads of pure trash from around the inside and the outside."

The property's surrounding lots are owned by Lincoln University or classified as a city park.

Markway said the foundation has one full-time employee who would conduct business through the office.

If approved by the City Council, the property would still be residential but with the addition of limited office use.
