Probation in Mid-Missouri theft, chase case

STL woman placed on probation for chase with authorities

A St. Louis woman has been placed on five years of supervised probation for her involvement in a February 2019 chase with authorities that began in Osage Beach and ended near Eugene in Cole County.

Te'Jia Caffey, 24, pleaded guilty during a hearing before Cole County Judge Cotton Walker to felony resisting arrest.

She was also ordered to pay $1,000 in restitution.

If she fails to follow her probation conditions, Caffey faces four years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

Caffey was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Janay Clark, 28, of St. Louis. Clark is facing a felony resisting arrest charge in this case, along with misdemeanor charges of failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, failing to drive in the right lane of the road, failure to stop at a stop sign, and failure to give proper signal when stopping or turning.

Clark and Caffey reportedly stole items from Dick's Sporting Goods in Osage Beach and fled the scene in a vehicle, according to a Missouri Highway Patrol probable cause statement. Osage Beach police followed them but terminated their pursuit once they got onto U.S. 54.

At U.S. 54 and Missouri 87, a trooper spotted the women's vehicle and the pursuit began again, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph.

Clark and Caffey exited U.S. 54 at Missouri 17 in Cole County. They crossed Missouri 17 and drove onto the on-ramp, starting back onto U.S. 54. The vehicle soon hit spike strips, which eventually led the women to stop the vehicle in the right lane of the highway. The women fled on foot into nearby woods but were later taken into custody.

Court records show both women have numerous convictions, all from the St. Louis area. Clark was on probation for receiving stolen property and theft and had three warrants for her arrest. Caffey also was on probation for receiving stolen property and theft, and there was a warrant for her arrest for robbery of a business with a weapon.
