Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri received $50,000 Thursday from Veterans United Foundation.
The gift is to help Catholic Charities complete its health and social services center serving Mid- Missouri.
Catholic Charities is nearing completion of renovations to the former chapel and gymnasium of the La Salette Missionaries Seminary in Jefferson City. The renovation of the structure is a $4.2 million project whose funding is called "Open Hearts Open Doors Renovation 2021."
The new home of the nonprofit will include a client-choice food pantry, universal-use rooms for health services, community and classroom spaces for group education and training and Catholic Charities other programs, such and health and nutrition services, community services, disaster services, housing counseling and family immigration services.
A community garden will also be on site.
Based in Columbia, the mission of Veterans United Foundation is to save lives. It gives back to veterans and military families. It plants "seeds of hope and opportunity in the communities we call home," according to its website. "We partner with local and nonprofit organizations who are on the ground making a difference."
Catholic Charities Executive Director Dan Lester said his staff is excited about the gift.
"(Veterans United Foundation) is such a generous organization - and we're so excited," he said. "They give - not just financially - they do lots of volunteering."
Veterans United Insurance has recently opened a Jefferson City office.
Lester said Veterans United employees later this summer will help Catholic Charities put together disaster preparedness kits for local communities.
The new Catholic Charities site is expected to be completed by the end of the summer, possibly in September.
