Back-to-school shoppers in Missouri will pay less in sales tax on computers and other school-related supplies over the next weekend, thanks to the state's annual sales tax holiday.

Missourians can skip the state sales tax Aug. 6-8 as the annual sales tax holiday returns just in time for back to school shopping.

The sales tax holiday runs 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6 to midnight Sunday, Aug. 8.

Tax exemptions are not limited to Missouri residents or students but are open to anyone who makes a qualified purchase.

The state sales tax exemption will apply to select purchases, including clothing, school supplies and personal computers.

Clothing less than $100 in value, including footwear, disposable diapers, and cloth or materials to make school uniforms, are exempt from the state sales tax.

Tax-exempt school supplies include textbooks, paper, pens and pencils, art supplies, backpacks, calculators less than $150 and software less than $350, among other standard classroom items. School supplies should not exceed $50 to remain tax exempt.

Personal computers, which include laptops, desktops and tower computer systems, and computer accessories, including printers, that are less than $1,500 are also exempt from the state sales tax.

Cities, counties and local tax jurisdictions could also choose to participate in the holiday by waiving local sales tax on back to school items.

Cole County and Jefferson City are not participating, meaning county and city sales taxes will apply but the state sales tax of 4.225 percent will be waived.
